What’s Involved in Caregiver Training

My little sister called me up the other day and told me that she thinks that she wants to attend a caregiver training program so that she can work with elderly patients as a personal assistant in their home. She wanted to know if I knew what was going to be required of her as she went through this kind of training.

I haven’t ever actually done caregiver training before but I’ve taken enough classes to know the basics of what she is probably going to be doing. I can’t imagine that training in home care providers is a lot different than any of the other training out there for personal care or social work assistants and those are classes that I have taken.

I told my sister that she would most likely get a textbook that she would have to work through and that she would be tested on the material. I also figured that the classes would involve watching informative dvds about topics related to the subject (alzheimer’s training dvds for example) and that there might be guest lecturers who have worked in the field.

Basically, I told her that she would be learning what she needed to know to be capable of doing the job. "Do you think that I can do it?" she asked me. And since I’m her big sister I told her that of course she can.
