Leaving School for Love
By DDM on Aug 26, 2008 in Education
When I was 21, I was really excited about the education that I was getting at a CA Culinary Arts School that worked off of the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Programs approach to teaching students how to work in the restaurant industry. I liked everything about the program and the plans that I had for my future career. I also liked a guy in my class that didn’t have the same passion for school that I did.
It wasn’t long before I was skipping my cooking classes to spend time engaging in a whirlwind romance with this man. And it wasn’t long before we decided to ditch the idea of school all together and spend some time bumming around the country together. When we would run out of money, we would get jobs waiting tables at a local restaurant until we could afford to move on again.
The romance was wonderful but ultimately it ended and I returned to California with a job skills set that limited me to waitressing. During every shift, I’d daydream about the career that I could have had by now as a chef in a five-star restaurant and I’d regret leaving school behind for love. Luckily, school is always there even if love isn’t so I knew that I could return if I wanted to!
