My First Big Snowstorm

Living in Colorado, the winters aren’t actually that bad — better than most people would perceive.  The biggest reason is because the air is dry, and the snow tends to evaporate between snowstorms (instead of melting).  We also enjoy fluctuating temperatures during the winter, so it can be 50 or 60 degrees the day after a snowstorm.

My first big snowstorm was in 1986, shortly after we moved to Colorado.  I think we got several feet in that storm, but I don’t remember exactly how much because I was only 6!  I do, however, remember being elated to have several days off of school.

Of course, what "snow day" meant to me and my sister was the opportunity to play in the snow.  So my mom dug out our childrens ski clothes and bundled us up in long underwear, turtlenecks, ski pants, and youth snowboard jackets.  We were winter kids all right, and we had all the gear to prove it!

The snow was glorious, deep enough to make tunnels just by digging.  I made a tunnel and hung out in it for a while before getting bored.  Then my friend and I dug a trench under each swing on the swingset, and piled the snow up extra high in front so that we could jump off of the swings and land in the snow.  My poor sister didn’t get to enjoy it much, though — she was so little that when she stepped off the porch, all you could see above the snow was the very top of her head!

That was a great snowstorm — too bad we don’t get many like that!

My Last Housewarming Party

Back when I moved into my duplex, I had a housewarming party to celebrate.  It was the first house I’d had all to myself — I’d once lived by myself in a studio apartment, but with every house or larger apartment I’d lived in up until that point, I had always had one or more roommates.  It was also a feat that demonstrated my good luck in landing a good job right out of college.  For these reasons, I felt I was really justified in celebrating!

At any rate, the housewarming party was a major success.  Several friends brought jar candles as housewarming gifts — probably one of the best housewarming gifts you can pick, in my opinion.  One friend brought lavender scented candlesaromatherapy candles for relaxation, she said.  (My boss was a nightmare, and as a result the job — which I only stayed in another 6 months — was rather stressful.)  Another friend brought a green pillar candle on a really nice candle plate — which I loved because my color theme in the living room and dining room was sage and ivory.

I have to admit, I enjoyed my housewarming party a little too much — I got rather tipsy, I’m afraid.  But like I said, getting that place was a wonderful thing for me, and I really felt that I deserved the chance to celebrate.  Luckily, everyone else had just as much fun as me, so I don’t think anyone minded!

Florida Honeymoon Checklist

Florida is a great place to go for your honeymoon!  If you are planning a Florida honeymoon, here are a few things you’ll need to do as you are making plans and before you go:

  • Shop for good tickets.  If you are flying to Florida, you will need to start looking for good tickets, probably a little ways in advance.  Tickets generally get more expensive if you buy them at the last minute, so be sure to think ahead on this one.
  • Look for Orlando rental cars.  If you are flying in, you will need to look into Fort Lauderdale airport car rental or Orlando airport car rental.
  • Check the weather in Florida.  Florida has a rainy season, a hot and humid summer season, and other varying weather patterns.  You’ll want to make sure you pack the right clothes for your honeymoon, so check the weather before you go!

Your honeymoon is a time that will last forever in your memories, something special just the two of you will share, so you should make sure to take care of all the details before you go.  That way you both can relax and enjoy your Florida honeymoon while you are there!

My Mother Loved Yoga

When I think about the mother of my childhood, I remember her doing yoga and gymnastics in the living room of our home.  My mom loved exercising, and was always interested in trying out new things that were supposed to be good for the body.  Consequently, I remember her doing a lot of yoga when I was a kid.

She practiced on a daily basis.  She bought exercise videos on how to do yoga.  She took yoga classes.  My mom loved yoga.

More recently, I’ve begun hearing about something new, something called Dahn Yoga.  I wonder what she would think of that?  Of course, it sounds like Dahn Yoga might be a little harder or require more dedication than the "recreational yoga" my mom did, but still — I could see her really getting into this.  Basically, Dahn Yoga is like tai chi, yoga, and martial arts, all combined.  Although its founder, Ilchi Lee, started teaching Dahn Yoga in the 1980s, I think it’s been only in the last 15 years or so that it has gained national popularity.

Now you can find Dahn Yoga in New York, California, and in many other states.  Chicago Dahn Yoga is also very popular.
