It used to be called Google Local, and basically it provides listings of local business and at the same time shows you a visual of where they are on the map — better features than the White Pages and Yellow Pages online, in my opinion, but it also seems to me to be more accurate.
For instance, if I want to look for a Washington DC dental service I could just go to Google.com and type in “Washington D C dentist.” The very first selection that comes up is a link to a Google map, with a list of businesses in the area. I could also look for something very specific, such as “sedation dentistry Washington DC.”
Once I’ve located the business I am interested in, I can get more information by clicking on one of the little red balloons. Google now can show a street view, which shows me what the location looks like as I’m driving down the street (so that hopefully I won’t drive by it on accident), as well as a satellite view that shows a bird’s eye view of the area. You can also get directions to the business from wherever you are coming from.
